Communication for Business

You have to appear before the Leadership team presenting your quarterly results.

You are meeting with your team about a new project.

You are leading an all hands meeting to outline programs for the upcoming year

You have been invited to present to an industry conference about your innovative approach.

You get nervous and lose sleep before the meeting or event. How do nerves or anxiety effect your body, mind and heart? The way you have contained that nervous energy won’t get you through it anymore. Can you reliably turn nervous energy into engaging, influential communication? Can you consistently be present?

Whether a brief moment in a hall way, a planned meeting, a critical face to face with a client, a BOD or a town hall, communicating is the critical element to your success. You have to be present, focused and authentic to achieve your outcome, to make a difference. You must be in control of your self, your thinking, your passions and your behavior. You need to know how others perceive you and what you need to do to have an impact. These are all elements of conscious communication. Feedback is often general, not often constructive and will not give you a clear image of how you come across to others. Your delivery and success depends on knowing how to create the desired perception in others.

How do you prepare for these and many other formal and informal situations? How long do you have to put it all together? How confident are you in your ability to deliver the proposal, presentation or simply lead the meeting?

Learning how to formulate what you say, even in the moment, and how you say it, is invaluable to your journey. You really need to work at it to develop new behavioral habits. The first step in building content is to focus on the outcome you want from your listeners: What do you want from them: understanding, belief/inspiration, commitment, action or decision? A clear outcome helps you increase your self-control.

Your presence is critical to gain commitment to your desired outcome. You need to stimulate their minds and passions. You need to be seen as confident, competent, authentic credible, and engaged. How you say it is more effective when it matches what you say.- speaking from head and heart. Your delivery behavior must be congruent with your content and visuals or you risk failure. Being relaxed, grounded and settled is foundational, increasing your ability to connect and deliver engaging, influential material. (see resources for document on Breathing)
